What is it that makes Kentuckians so brave? Muhammad Ali. Abraham Lincoln. Jill Hamilton.
You probably have heard about Ali and Lincoln, but did you know that Jill’s fearless attitude brought her halfway around the world to China – without a single lodging or travel reservation?
“My roommate and I were fascinated by Asia. We just decided to take a month off of work, picked five cities we wanted to visit, and just went. We figured out how to get from place to place as we went along.”
It turns out Jill’s taste for adventure was hard to satisfy, even after she returned to the U.S.
“The food in China is unbelievable. I won’t eat Chinese food in the United States,” she says. “There are things that you don’t see at restaurants here – like whole fish. They also serve a lot of lotus root, which kind of looks like Swiss cheese. It’s delicious!”
While we’re willing to take her word for it, there is one American staple that Jill can’t do without.
“The Chinese don’t really do bacon, which is unfortunate because it’s my favorite food,” she says. “But if I lived there, I would find a way to work that in.”
Jill developed a passion for taking the road less traveled at a young age. When she was six, she took on the job of renovating her own playhouse.
“The walls were just wood studs – it wasn’t finished. I decided that it needed an upgrade, so I made my dad buy Styrofoam and used that as dry wall,” she says. “Our neighbors owned a company that printed wallpaper, and I got them to donate wallpaper to me so I could decorate my playhouse.”
It’s that sort of determination that made her a natural for SE2. If something needs to be done, she’ll find a way to do it, surmounting barriers that might intimidate others.
So plan on adding another name to the list of notables from Kentucky. Jill will be making her mark.
