It used to be that Sarah Kurz got puzzled stares...
"It's funny that you asked what my favorite Halloween costume was when I was little. You ready for this?"
The world waits, expecting something, well, expected, like a princess or a ladybug. Winnie the Pooh, perhaps.
"My favorite was when I was a life-sized child figure adorned. Pretty cool, right?" She tips her head a little to the left and narrows her eyes slightly, revealing an understated, playful sarcasm.
"My class decorated statues of children for a public art display. I loved them," she says, discarding the sarcasm. "When it came time to decide what I wanted to be for Halloween, it had to be one of those figures.
"Of course," she says, "no one knew what I was. I got lots of questions and funny looks when my sister and I went out trick-or-treating." No matter. She answered politely, collected the candy, and then pushed on to the next house.
That sort of doggedness has helped her a lot since then, from juggling a rigorous academic path at Duke University to holding a key role with 2004 successful campaign supporting Amendment 35, which raised the tobacco tax to pay for healthcare.
Now that Sarah's at the forefront of several complex SE2 projects -- focusing on telecommunications, healthcare and education issues -- she's inviting far fewer questions about who she's supposed to be.
